Cheongju University wins the grand prize in the Universal Design Idea Competition
The Cheongdae Times Cub reporter Jin Hyung Cho
Cheongju University Department of Architecture students Jang Beom-yong, Yoo Hyun-woo, and Jeong Seung-je won the grand prize in the architecture field at the 5th Universal Design Idea Competition.
Cheongju University participated in the Universal Design Idea Contest held to contribute to spreading awareness of universal design by resolving social prejudice against the disabled, the elderly, and pregnant women and forming a consensus. Universal design recognition refers to recognition designed so that anyone can use it safely and conveniently, regardless of disability, gender, age, nationality, etc.
In this contest, which was held under the special theme of ‘Connecting everyone, there is,’ they solved the obstacles of existing swimming facilities and implemented a universal swimming pool design that can be used by all. The 'flat swimming pool', which is fair to everyone regardless of disability, gender, age, nationality, etc., was designed based on the fact that although swimming is the most desired sport according to a survey on the status of sports for the disabled, the actual rate of use is only 1.8%.
Specifically, they proposed a combination of storage closets for wheelchair users, a slope lane to improve accessibility, and Braille blocks to help visually impaired people easily understand the route.
The Korea Development for the Disabled held an open contest for ideas on universal design for all citizens last July in order to discover design ideas devised to be safe and convenient for everyone regardless of gender, age, nationality, cultural background, or disability. |
